Common Toe Nail Disorders People Have…

Toe Fungus

Toenail Fungus

Information

Nail fungus is a common condition that will begin as a white or yellow spot under the tip of your fingernail or toenail. As the fungal infection goes deeper, nail fungus can cause your nail to discolor, thicken and/or crumble at the edge. It can affect more than one nail.

If your nail fungus is painful and has caused thickened nails, self-care steps and medications can help. But even if treatment is successful, nail fungus often will come back.

Nail fungus is also called onychomycosis (on-ih-koh-my-KOH-sis). When fungus infects the areas between your toes and the skin of your feet, it’s called athlete’s foot (tinea pedis).

Symptoms

Your nails may be thickened, whitish to yellow brown discoloration and sometimes may be brittle, crumbly or ragged. The nail might also be dark in color and have a foul smell.

ingrown toenail

Ingrown Toenails

Information

If you trim your toenails too short, especially on the sides of your big toes, you may set the stage for an ingrown toenail. Like many people, when you trim your toenails, you may taper the corners so that the nail curves with the shape of your toe. But this technique may encourage your toenail to grow into the skin of your toe. The sides of the nail curl down and dig into your skin. An ingrown toenail may also happen if you wear shoes that are too tight or too short.

Symptoms

ingrown toenail, it may be hard, swollen and tender. Later, it may get red and infected, and feel very sore.
